International Workshop –“Understanding the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages”

On September 13-14, 2010 the Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies (GFSIS) hosted a two-day international workshop on the subject of “Understanding the European Charter for Regional or Minority languages”.

This Charter is a part of the Council of Europe Convention on Minority Rights. It`s one of the commitments and obligations to the Council of Europe that still needs to be signed and ratified by Georgia. The objective of the workshop was to have an exchange of views among experts, civil servants and scientists on the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages and implications of its signature and ratification in Georgia.

The workshop was organized by the Council of Europe in partnership with Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies, Caucasus Institute for Peace, Democracy and Development (CIPDD) and the European Center for Minority Issues (ECMI). Among the participants were members of the Parliament, civil servants and NGO representatives. The main presentations were delivered by the Council of Europe experts. The Georgian State Minister on Reintegration, Mr. Temur Iakobashvili also took part in one of the workshop sessions.
