Conference “Shifting Conflict and Security Dynamics in the Caucasus: The Role of Regional Powers”

On April 29, 2016 the conference “Shifting Conflict and Security Dynamics in the Caucasus: The Role of Regional Powers” was organized by the Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

The conference that took place under the CASCADE project, aimed to discuss the conflicts and security dynamics in the Caucasus region and the role of regional powers, as well as the geostrategic importance of the Caucasus region and regional security challenges. 

The event was opened by Kakha Gogolashvili, the Director of EU Studies at the Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies and Neil Melvin, the Senior Researcher, SIPRI. The keynote address was delivered by Tom de Waal, the Senior Associate, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. 

Session one dedicated to the role of Russian Federation in the current regional conflicts included Derek Averre, the Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham and Julie Wilhelmsen, the Senior Researcher, NUPI as speakers. 

During the second session, the issue of Turkey and Iran as the regional powers was discussed by Niger Goksel, the Senior Analyst, International Crisis Group and Richard Giragosian, the Director of Regional Studies Centre. The speakers of the last sessions discussed the regionalization of conflicts and the achievements of the European Union and the role of the United States. 

The conference was attended by the representatives of diplomatic corps, the expert and NGO community as well as the governmental agencies.
