Lecture on US- Georgia Relations

2005 / 07 / 30

On July 29, 2005 the Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies hosted Matthew J. Bryza, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs for the United States, who delivered a speech on the rationale behind the Bush administration’s policies towards Georgia. His speech emphasized the special role that democracy promotion plays in relations between the United States and Georgia.

Mr. Bryza addressed the reasons that led President Bush to include Georgia in his tour of Europe in May of this year. This visit was to encourage the progress Georgia has made in the last years and promote its dedication to democratization. According to the speaker, U.S interest in Georgia is determined with its geopolitical location and energy, terrorism and security issues that greatly concern USA.

The lecture was followed with an interesting discussion that touched the topics of Georgia’s internal affairs and its relations with US and Russia.
