Seminar – “Mackinder and Heartland: The Geopolitics of Russia`s War on Georgia”

On January 29, 2009 the Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies, in cooperation with the Georgian Security Analysis Center, hosted a seminar "Mackinder and The Heartland: The Geopolitics of Russia's War on Georgia".  The lecturer of the seminar was Ambassador David J. Smith, Director, of the Georgian Security Analysis Center; the commentators were Professor Alexander Rondeli, President of the Foundation, and Dr. Nika Chitadze, representative of the Ilia Chavchavadze State University.

The seminar was about Halford Mackinder`s theory, how was he seeing the world in early of 20th century, how important was Russia on the political arena at that time and how important is it now.  Ambassador David J. Smith compared the importance of the heartland between Mackinder`s era and now.  Also the major discussion was about Russia's war on Georgia, how important is Georgia to reaching the heartland and how Russia sees it.

The event was attended by the representative of the Government, NGOs, foreign diplomats, foreign experts and students. Media representatives also attended in their personal capacities.

After the presentation and comments, questioning and discussion took place.
