The Consultation Series on “Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Paper” Implementation

On October 17, 2005 the Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies, in cooperation with the Ministry of Economic Development, the Canadian Bureau for International Education and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP),  organized public consultation series regarding the preparation of the annual progressive report on “2005 Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Paper” (EDPRP)  Implementation process. The consultations lasted for two days.

The Representatives from 21 NGOs, along with the experts from the World Bank, UNDP and the Delegation of the European Commission attended the consultations. The event opened with the speech of Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Mr. Zaza Chelidze. The opening speech was followed with the presentation by the members of the UNDP project – “Support to the Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Programme of Georgia”, who delivered to the audience the overview of the current and future reforms in the different sectors such as governance, transport and communications, energy, agriculture and etc. The consultation series ended with the profound discussion guided by Prof. Merab Kakulia. At the end of the meeting, The Ministry asked participants to provide their opinions in written comments as they can be taken into account during the preparation of 2005 EDPRP Implementation Progress Report.  

It should be noted that in September the consultations were preceded by the one-week seminar on conducting public consultations, led by Canadian experts, Dr. Paul Brown and Ms. Larissa Lozowchuk. The seminar involved the government staff from the Department of Economic Policy of the Ministry of Economic Development.
