Meeting between Legatum Institute Researchers and Georgian Experts

On March 19, 2014 GFSIS hosted researchers from the Legatum Institute; Anne Applebaum: Polish-American journalist and historian, former editor of The Economist, member of The Washington Post and Slate Magazine editorial boards, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author for the books Gulag: A History (2003) and Iron Curtain: The Crushing of Eastern Europe (2012); Peter Pomerantsev: British journalist, producer and researcher, author of the book Russia – A Postmodern Dictatorship? (2013), Jovan Ratkovic: Adviser to the President of the Democratic Party of Serbia, former foreign policy adviser to the President of Serbia and National Coordinator of Serbia and Montenegro of the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe, and Geoffrey Ronald Robertson QC: British lawyer and broadcaster.  

The title of the meeting was “The totalitarian mentality: How Stalin created it and how we can change it.” The meeting was followed by a lively discussion, where foreign guests shared their views of totalitarian regimes in Eastern European countries, emphasizing the importance of the cultural aspects of totalitarianism. Georgian experts shared their own experiences of the soviet regime and expressed their opinions about the totalitarian mentality. 

The meeting was chaired by Amb. Giorgi Badridze, Senior Fellow at GFSIS.
