Panel Discussion “Nordic-Baltic Security Cooperation: facing threats from Russia

On December 16, 2016 the Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies (Rondeli Foundation) hosted a panel discussion “Nordic-Baltic Security cooperation: facing threats from Russia”

The discussion was opened by Kakha Gogolashvili, the Director of EU Studies of the Foundation. Mr. Gogolashvili introduced the speakers to the audience and made a brief introduction of the Nordic-Baltic Cooperation Format, the history, structure and the priorities of the cooperation.

The speakers of the panel discussion included Amb. Marina Kaljurand, the Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia and Ekke Nomm, the Director of Estonian School of Diplomacy. Amb. Kaljurand stressed the importance of the regional cooperation among the Baltic and Nordic countries in the scope of the common security and foreign policy priorities. She also touched upon the new challenges facing Europe including the migration crisis, terrorism and threats coming from Russia. Ambassador of Latvia in Georgia H.E Jānis Zlamets, who was attending the panel discussion also expressed the wish to contribute to the topic and made a detailed explanation of the Nordic-Baltic Cooperation format.  Mr. Ekke Nomm, made the closing remarks.  

The representatives of expert community, governmental and non-governmental organizations and diplomatic corps attended the event. The presentation was followed by an engaging discussion on the issues of Euro-Atlantic integration of Georgia and experience of Baltic States, tools to counter Anti-Western Propaganda, cooperation of Finland and Sweden with NATO and many more.

The panel discussion was held in the framework of the series “The Baltic States’ Experience for Georgia” jointly conducted by the Rondeli Foundation and the Estonian School of Diplomacy.
