Donbas Area

Russians continued to attack aggressively in the Severodonetsk-Lysychansk area, trying to breach Ukrainian defenses, and to surround Ukrainian forces defending this territory.

Failing to completely take Rubizhne despite continuous attacks and heavy street battles there, Russians attempted to cut it off from Severodonetsk by taking the village of Vojevodivka. The two sides exchanged attacks and counterattacks there with the village passing from hands to hands. Ukrainians were able to take back control of the village and retained it as of the time of writing.

To the immediate southeast of Severodonetsk, Russians attacked and took the village of Voronove.

West of Severodonetsk, Russian forces crossed the Siverskyi Donets River, threatening the main road that connects Severodonetsk and Lysychansk to the rest of the Ukrainian-held territory. Ukrainians engaged these Russian forces with intense fighting taking place in the village of Bilohorivka. According to the latest information as of the time of writing, Ukrainians beat back this Russian attack.

Russians continued their efforts to cut off Severodonetsk-Lysychansk from the south as well. On 7 May they took the town of Popasna after an almost two months-long battle. They also took Nyzhnie after long fighting, and then attacked the town of Toshkivka.

Intense fighting also occurred in the area north of Kramatorsk and Slovyansk where Russians managed a limited advance attacking the village of Shandryholove, with the outcome unclear as of the time of writing.

No major changes occurred in the central and southern parts of the Donbas frontline.

Southwest of Izyum, Russians took the village of Velyka Komyshuvakha.

Siege of Mariupol

The Russian assault of the Azovstal plant continued during the reported period resulting in continuous heavy fighting. Although the defenders’ position was difficult, they retained control of a defensive perimeter and the area within it.

Kharkiv Area

Ukrainians achieved new advances north and northeast of Kharkiv.

They liberated the village of Tsyrkuny that had long been the Russian position located closest to the Kharkiv city, and then pushed Russians further north from it liberating several other villages, including among others Cherkaski Tyshky, Ruski Tyshky, and according to some reports, Lyptsi.

Ukrainians also liberated a number of villages northeast of Kharkiv clearing the road between the city and the recently liberated town of Staryi Saltiv. They also pushed north of Staryi Saltiv liberating more towns and villages including among others Bairak, Verkhnii Saltiv and Rubizhne (namesake of the besieged city near Severodonetsk).
