Rondeli Russian Military Digest

The Battle of Ukraine, Special Issue 13, From 1 April, 16:00 to 4 April, 16:00 Kyiv Time

Author: David Batashvili, Research Fellow at the Rondeli Foundation

This is a special issue of the Rondeli Russian Military Digest dedicated to the Russo-Ukrainian War, composed on the basis of numerous open sources.

During the reported period Ukraine triumphed in the north of the country while Russians continued to attack Ukrainian forces within and around Donbas region.

Northern Ukraine

Ukrainian forces completely liberated Kyiv Oblast, successfully concluding the battle for Kyiv that had been raging since the beginning of the Russian invasion. They also liberated most of Chernihiv Oblast, although at the time of writing some Russian forces likely remained in the northernmost parts of the oblast, near the Russian and Belarusian borders. Ukrainians also liberated either all or nearly all of Sumy Oblast.

Some of the Russian troops managed to retreat from these three northern oblasts of Ukraine in an organized manner, while others were ambushed or caught up with by Ukrainian forces, and defeated with resulting casualties and loss of a large number of armored and other vehicles.

At the time of writing, Russian forces did not appear likely to resume offensive operations in northern Ukraine anytime soon.

Donbas Area

Battles continued to the south of Izyum. Russians achieved a limited advance southwest from this city.

Russians continued attacks on the whole Donbas front from Rubizhne in the north to the area west of Vuhledar in the south. They apparently achieved a limited advance to the southwest of Horlivka, reaching the town of Novobakhmutivka. No other notable changes in territorial control occurred in this area.
