Public Lecture on Romania’s Accession to NATO and 20 Years of Partnership for Peace

On April 8, 2014 GFSIS hosted Mr. Adrian Gabriel Davidoiu, General Director, Department for Strategic Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania. Mr. William Lahue, Head of NATO Liaison Office in Georgia, NATO Liaison Officer for South Caucasus and Mr. Tornike Parulava, Deputy Director of the Security Policy and Euro-Atlantic Integration Department, MFA Georgia. The topic of the public lecture was the lessons learned after 10 years of Romania’s accession to NATO and 20 years of Partnership for Peace. 

The lecture and discussion engaged with a wide variety of topics, including the prospects for NATO enlargement, the security environment in the South Caucasus, recent events in Ukraine and Russian annexation of Crimea, Georgia’s contribution to NATO’s peacekeeping operations and so on. Mr. Adrian Gabriel Davidoiu provided a historic analysis of Romania’s NATO membership and the county’s experience of the accession process. Mr. William Lahue focused on the Partnership for Peace, emphasizing its importance and limits for former soviet countries. 

Mr. Tornike Parulava spoke on the prospects of Georgia’s NATO membership. He provided several examples of how NATO membership had positively affected on relations between Russia and former soviet countries. 

After the presentations, the guest speakers responded to questions from the audience.
