Meeting with the Representatives of Brookings Institution

2014 / 10 / 17

On 17 October, 2014 the Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies (GFSIS) hosted the representatives of the Brookings Institution; Fiona Hill, Senior Fellow and Director of the Center on the United States and Europe; Andrew Moffatt, Associated Director of the Center on the United States and Europe; and Kemal Kirisci, TUSAID Senior Fellow of the Center on the United States and Europe.

The roundtable focused on the framework of a newly launched research project at the Brookings Institution to re-assess the South Caucasus region and its strategic importance as a fulcrum between Turkey, Iran, Russia, and the EU; in particular Turkey`s relations with Armenia and the region against the backdrop of the hundredth anniversary of the 1915 Armenian Genocide.

During the meeting Georgian experts expressed their views on regional integration and stability, and the EU’s role in EaP countries, mainly focusing on EU-Georgia relations after the signing of the EU association agreement and Armenia`s choice for the Eurasian Union. They conducted a brief overview on the existing political situation in Georgia, and spoke about the US and EU`s role in maintaining peace and stability in the region.
