Public Seminar: “How the War Started”

On October 9, 2008 the Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies, in cooperation with the Georgian Security Analysis Center, hosted a public seminar: "How the War Started". The chairman of the seminar was Professor Alexander Rondeli, President of the Foundation. The participants included:  Mr. Alexander Lomaia, Secretary of the National Security Council, Mr. Shota Utiashvili, Head of the Department of Information and Public Affairs, Ministry of Internal Affairs  and Ambassador David J. Smith, Director of Georgian Security Analysis Center.

The presentations was followed by the discussion. The panel discussion covered topics related to war:  how it started, the background of Russian-Georgian relations since independence, specific events that led to the war, the global geopolitical perspective and what are the future prospects. The discussion was focused on the issues such as the strategy of the war, particularly what was done in the beginning to avoid war, and what the main strategy was in the early days of the war. The event was attended by representatives of the Government, NGOs, foreign diplomats, foreign experts and students. Media representatives also attended.
