Public Lecture - “Energy Security: Emerging Global & Regional Trends”

On October 13, 2016 the Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies organized a public lecture “Energy Security: Emerging Global & Regional Trends”. The lecture was delivered by Prof. Theresa Sabonis-Helf, Professor of the National Security Strategy at the National War College, Washington DC.

The speaker explained the main components of energy security, examined various risk factors and benefits of different energy projects and consortiums. Prof. Sabonis-Helf discussed the energy and national strategy through looking at the energy as an end, as the way and as the means; as well as discussed the economic, environmental, political and technological risks in the pursuit of energy.  

The audience consisted of the representatives of national security community –mainly of the alumni and representatives of current cohorts of various programs for public servants implemented by GFSIS.

The lecture was followed by an ardent discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of the big Hydropower plants in Georgia (Enguri and Nenskra hpp); the questions mostly referred to the dilemma - which should be Georgia’s priority while implementing the energy projects? Reliability, affordability or environmental friendliness.
